We have cats and kittens ready for forever homes. Many of them have suffered sad beginnings. Please open your heart and home to a homeless kitty!

All of our cats and kittens have been:

  • Medically checked by a veterinarian
  • Tested for Feline Leukemia and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus
  • Treated for parasites
  • Vaccinated against FVRCP (Distemper) and Rabies (over 12 weeks of age)
  • Spayed/Neutered

Please also note that we make matches on a rolling basis. If you have applied with a specific cat or kitten in mind, please know that this cat may be matched by the time we finish processing your application. We have many wonderful cats and kittens and we work to make matches for every approved applicant.

Adoption Fees

$200 for cats
$250 for kittens*

*A note about kittens: Kittens (6 months and under) must go to a home that has another young cat-friendly cat or dog (not a senior pet), or in pairs. It is very important for kittens to have social interaction with other animals as they learn manners and boundaries.

Your adoption fee helps defray only a portion of BCC’s total costs to feed and medically attend to the cats and kittens we rescue and shelter.

Please Note: BCC is a rescue organization. Therefore, it is not possible to predict the quantity, age, sex, or breed of the felines that will be available for adoption.

steps in the adoption process

These are the typical steps in BCC’s adoption process. We personalize each adoption experience, so there may be some differences.

  1. Complete an adoption application. Click here to fill out the Google Adoption Application Form.
  2. Our small volunteer team will call your landlord (if applicable), vet office (if applicable), and references. Please notify all of these parties to expect contact from Branford Compassion Club. Note: Your vet office will NOT release medical records information until you give them permission.
  3. Once your application is processed, a volunteer adoption counselor will contact you to set up an appointment to meet cats/kittens. Nearly all of our kittens are in foster homes nearby the shelter. They will work with you to recommend supplies and guide you through the introduction and acclimation process.

Adoptions are conducted by appointment with approved adopters. Our small volunteer team is not able to respond to every application. If you have not received a reply within 2 weeks, we likely don’t have a good fit for your application.

If you have any questions about the form or the adoption process, do not hesitate to contact us at branfordcompassionapplications@gmail.com.

Adoption FAQ

How long does the process typically take?
Typically, an application takes 2-7 days to process. Please monitor your email inbox for questions or updates. We are a small volunteer team; if you have not heard back within 2 weeks, we do not currently have a match for your application. Once your application is approved, you will work with a volunteer adoption counselor to review and meet potential matches. The entire process typically takes 1-4 weeks.

Can I take a cat/kitten home same-day?
No; adoption is a commitment for the cat’s entire life, so we follow a careful and supportive process. Adopters need to gather supplies and set up a veterinary account, in addition to taking time to consider possible matches.

Can I adopt a single kitten?
No; due to the higher socialization needs and training of kittens, we require them to either be adopted in pairs or go to a home with a young cat or dog with cat experience.

I want to adopt a cat who has been at BCC for a while. What types cats are those?
The cats who remain under BCC’s care the longest typically have a combination of the following: they require intense socializing, are on a special diet, or have medical needs. We welcome adopters who are open to giving a “hard to adopt” cat a chance!

How long is my application valid for?
1 year. If you’ve adopted from BCC in the past, you will need to complete another application if it’s been 1+ year since your last adoption.

I have young children. What types of cats are good for my family?
As children grow, they learn about social cues and boundaries with animals. Examples include gentle touch, respecting the pet’s space, and being careful about keeping all doors shut to prevent lost pets. Factoring in our many years of adoption experience, we do not send cats/kittens home to families with children under the age of 5.

Why are your adoption fees so high?
The average cost of medical care per BCC cat/kitten is $550. Our adoption fee only offsets about 40% of the expenses incurred. The cost for an individual to get their cat/kitten these vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, and testing (outlined above) is significantly higher than our adoption fee.

I see some cats who are FIV+. What does that mean?
Here is a helpful article on Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)

Please feel free to speak with your vet about this issue.

We have adopted out many dozens of FIV+ cats to indoor-only homes, including to homes with FIV- cats.
