Emergency Foster Housing Guide

Quick checklist (what to do first)

  • Contact your local shelter or crisis foster program immediately (some programs can fast-track placements). Branford Compassion Club does not have an emergency foster program.
  • If a pet is injured or sick, find emergency vet care — do not delay transport.
  • Gather ID, vet records, medication, and a recent photo of the pet for identification and intake forms.
  • Ask about temporary boarding, transport help, and any costs or vouchers available.

Who to contact in Connecticut

What to bring / prepare for a foster placement

  • Copy of vet records (vaccines, medications, recent diagnoses) or at least the name & phone of the vet.
  • Any medications (clearly labeled), feeding instructions, favorite toys/blanket (comfort items help reduce stress).
  • Carrier/crate (for cats/small animals) or secure harness & leash for dogs; waste bags and familiar food.
  • Photo ID of owner, proof of ownership if available (microchip info, adoption papers).

Aftercare & reunification

  • Get a clear reunification plan in writing: who authorizes return, required paperwork, and expected timelines.
  • If ownership is ever questioned, microchip registration and vet/adoption paperwork helps speed up return to you.
  • Keep receipts for any out-of-pocket costs — some programs reimburse approved emergency expenses.
