2022 Annual Appeal
We continue to provide for the feeding, shelter, and care of homeless, abandoned, and feral cats; to educate the public about the importance of spay/neuter population control, responsible pet ownership and kindness to animals; and to establish an ongoing community network to achieve these goals.
When we rescue, we don’t know what the related vetting expenses will be, not all health issues are immediately evident.
In June BCC rescued 4 kittens, whose mom had not been spayed and was allowed outside, which exposed the unborn kittens to serious diseases. With expert veterinary care, all 4 kittens survived, flourished, and were adopted into loving homes. Their veterinary costs, however, went far beyond what could be covered by our usual $225/ kitten adoption fee. The actual cost was $3,615.83, exceeding the adoption fee by $2,715.83.
Since January 1st we have accepted more than 246 cats/kittens and adopted out over 229, bringing the total adoptions since we opened our shelter in 2011, to more than 2,519! We currently have over 162 cats and kittens under our care, spread out between foster homes and our shelter! Our shelter manager receives requests daily for rescue assistance from people and local animal control agencies.
Importantly though, as the recent beneficiary of some substantial donations, we have also begun to invest for our future. Our strategy is conservative, with the goal of supplementing our regular fundraising while continuing to grow our investments. We hope this strategy will help to secure our next 25 years and that we can look forward to your continuing support. Bequests, stock transfers or donations from your IRA can be excellent, tax-efficient ways to participate in this effort. We encourage you to discuss the options with your estate planning or tax advisor. If you would like to see more about this and see how you might participate, please visit our website: https://branfordcompassionclub.org/how-to-help/planned-giving/
While we plan, we still need your help NOW to continue fulfilling our mission!

Animal Awareness Day: October 2
DOWNLOAD THE ANIMAL AWARENESS DAY PROGRAM
Check out our event program for Animal Awareness Day coming up October 2nd! It’s a fun day for the whole family so please stop by. Lots to see and do. We are excited this year to welcome WPLR celebrities AJ & Ashley from the popular, top-rated morning radio show, Chaz & AJ. Please stop by their booth to say hello.
We will also be collecting cat food and shelter supplies at the event. You can find out what we currently need by looking at our Amazon Wish List or our list on Chewy.com.
We do regret that even though the original publicity flyer states that the Resources in Search and Rescue dog organization will be there, they had to cancel at the last minute.
A special thanks to all our sponsors who make this day possible, and to the vendors and rescue groups joining us!
Adoption Story Scores Gala Tickets
Lennox and Luca’s heartwarming adoption story, found below, scored cat-dad Sebastian two tickets to Branford Compassion Club’s 25th anniversary gala at Pine Orchard Yacht & Country Club on September 23.
Sebastian Diaz – Lennox and Luca
My name is Sebastian and I am the proud cat dad of Lennox and Luca (formerly Bobby).
Lennox had been at the Branford Compassion Club for ~2 years when I visited for the first time. He was extremely wary of people and only let himself be pet at a distance by some of the staff at BCC. When I requested to adopt Lennox, I was advised that it would be difficult to get him acclimated and comfortable and that I would need a lot of patience. When Lennox first arrived, he hid in my closet behind my shirts for the first two weeks. A couple of months later, he was comfortable exploring my room as long as I was distant.
Today, Lennox comes over for pets when I call him. He runs around with his tail up when I feed him wet food. He has become confident enough to sit on the couch next to me and watch TV while I pet him. And he races around and wrestles with his brother Luca.
Lennox’ progress was unthinkable when I first met him and I’ve been in awe at how much he has thrived with love and patience.
Luca arrived almost a year after Lennox. He was energetic and eager to socialize which made Lennox anxious in the beginning. Today they are inseparable and whenever Lennox feels anxious around people, Luca will come around and groom him or stand in front of him to deflect attention.
Luca loves people. He jumps on everybody’s lap and demands attention and pets. He loves toys that are attached to a string and he will pull on them until the string breaks and he can run away with it. Luca’s incredibly curious and will poke around whenever anyone is doing something. He also loves human food and will tear apart bags to get it. Despite his chaotic hobby, Luca is the perfect addition to our family. He gives Lennox the energy and confidence he needs while providing love and affection to everyone around him.
I’m blessed to have them both in my life and I look forward to being the best cat dad they can have.

BCC Celebrates its 25th Anniversary
Branford Compassion Club (BCC), a feline rescue and adoption organization, is in its 25th year of saving felines and controlling the homeless feline population in Branford and nearby communities.
On Friday, September 23, BCC will celebrate this milestone with a gala at Pine Orchard Yacht & Country Club in Branford. A celebratory dinner, with special guest songwriter Julie Gold, is planned. Gold is best known for her 1991 Grammy Award-winning song “From a Distance,” which, as recorded by Bette Midler, peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. In addition, Branford philanthropist, arts and theater impresario Colin Sheehan, who, among his many duties, serves as the town’s Arts, Culture & Special Events Coordinator, will be the Master of Ceremonies for the evening.
BCC is currently offering combined sponsorship packages ranging from $500 to $5,000 for the gala in September and its annual Animal Awareness Day on October 2.
Our feline rescue has weathered many storms during its 25-year history, but thanks to generous donors and dedicated volunteers, we continue to fulfill our mission, and we look forward to the next 25 years.
Branford Compassion Club Hosts Animal Awareness Day On October 2
Branford Compassion Club Hosts Animal Awareness Day with the Annual Blessing of the Animals OCTOBER 2, 2022 on the Branford Town Green
Dear Friends and Supporters:
That time of the year is coming up again – time to celebrate our animal friends of the family with a pet festival as we once again host Animal Awareness Day from noon – 4:00 p.m. Sunday, October 2, 2022 on the Branford Town Green. This event benefits the Branford Compassion Club Feline Rescue & Adoption Center.
It’s a fun day for everyone, including music, children’s activities, food trucks, live animals (mini horses!), live animal educational demonstrations, a giant bake sale, booths featuring a variety of area animal care and rescue groups, as well as craft and business vendors, and you never know what other surprises may happen! This year we have use of the entire green and will be utilizing the giant “circus-style” tent that will still be on the Green from events held prior to ours. There will be an option for you to either be under the large tent or bring your own. More on that later if you sign up!
The highlight of the day, as always, will be the Blessing of the Animals at 1:30 p.m., the annual nod to the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, large and small. An interesting array of pets always makes their way to the Green to be blessed by local clergy from several denominations. In past years, that parade has ranged from dogs, cats and gerbils to horses, rabbits and birds.
We are looking for many vendors to join us as well as our fellow rescue/non-profit groups. Click here for a Vendor Application.
You can pay by mail, making your check (sorry, no credit cards) payable to Branford Compassion Club, along with your completed form, and mailing them to me directly. We encourage you to pass on the application to any other vendors or animal rescue groups you may know who might be interested in joining our event. The deadline to respond is August 31.
This is a big year for the Branford Compassion Club, celebrating our 25th anniversary in existence while rescuing and finding homes for several thousands of homeless cats since we began! BCC is a privately funded nonprofit organization founded in 1997 to raise awareness about the importance of spay-neutering felines, to aid in the adoption of homeless cats and care for those deemed unadoptable in area feral colonies. Those feral cats are trapped, neutered and released into the perpetual daily care of BCC volunteers. Our Feline Rescue & Adoption Center, which opened in 2011, although currently still closed to the public due to the pandemic, continues to rescue and rehome cats on a daily basis, and this need and this challenge remain a high priority.
We look forward to and greatly appreciate your support!
Chris Gagne, Board of Directors and Fundraising Chairperson
